Chapter 10: Lunch and a Show

Hugh

There’s a knock at my office door.

“Come in,” I answer.

My boss, Caley Halston, a tall slender brunette walks in. “Are you busy?” she asks, taking off her glasses. A red belted dress clings to her frame like a glove. She’s taken her long dark hair out of the bun that she was wearing all morning, so it’s draped around her shoulders like a shawl.

Clearing my throat I sit up straight and try to look attentive. “Not at the moment. Just getting ready to go to lunch. Anything the matter?” I ask.

“Hate to do this to you, but I’m gonna need you to cover for me again this Friday.”

“This Friday?”

“Yes, I can’t make the second term meeting at all, so you’ll need to lead this time.”

A lot of responsibility has just be dropped into my lap. I’m the assistant director for a commercial laundry appliance company. We’ve been able to corner the market for the past few decades, but there’s a new project that Caley has been working on for a while. She thinks we should have a new logo, something familiar, but modern.

“Lead?”

Caley sits at the edge of my desk and peers down at me. Making eye contact means hovering my gaze just above her breasts. It’s cold in here and her nipples are poking through the front of her dress.

“You can handle it. I know you can,” she says, curving her full lips into a smirk. Caley is a flirt. She’s always had a habit of using her sex appeal to get people around the office to do whatever she wants. I think she’s a good boss and deserves her position, but some people say she slept her way to the top.

“Yeah, okay,” I agree, trying to hide my disappointment. Now that I have Karen, I’m not as sexually frustrated. And that means I don’t feel so compelled to jump whenever Caley says how high. “Just let me check my schedule.”

“You’re schedule?” She seems surprised to hear me say that.

“I need to make sure it doesn’t conflict with my other responsibilities around the office.” Gone are the days when I used to let myself get behind on work just to help out Caley Halston, no matter how beautiful or seductive she may be.

“Oh. Right.”

“But I’ll get back to you by tomorrow morning.”

“Good,” she nods. “Because I’m hoping to hire someone who specializes in graphic design immediately. I don’t want to go back to manipulating stock images. We need something more memorable for our new logo, especially if we want to pull in the next generation.”

“Understood,” I agree.

“I’ve already got Simon looking within the company for the right fit. We need to use a designer who has a clean legal history and someone who doesn’t have the potential to embarrass the company. I don’t want another James Lane,” she says, referring to guy we hired six months ago to design the logo for our since canceled, eco-friendly angle.

“Agreed.”

James was a college student who had been interning with us for a year.
